Harper Monkey Trail

Hollywood

Address: 1859 N. Curson, Hollywood, CA

A creative, challenging hike in the Hollywood Hills with rewarding, mountaintop views of the whole city.

The trail starts at the old Japanese Garden entrance behind the big lawn. Follow the pillared-path along the wall to the right of the palm trees, then walk thru the Japanese entryway and begin your way up the hill.

The beginning of the hike lulls you with its inviting and interesting meditative installations, then progressively transitions into a real workout as the terrain starts demanding your attention / challenging your fitness abilities. You’ll navigate narrow inclines, loose sand, rocky slopes, but ultimately overcome these obstacles as the course is absolutely doable for anyone in half decent shape; grueling in a good way!

Bring plenty of water and make sure to hang a right up the hillside where the path soon appears to dead end. After climbing your way up you’ll emerge near the top of the mountain, which will be quite apparent and require one last push.

All things considered, this is a phenomenal hike with plenty of action and sense of accomplishment – from the beautiful park entrance to the panoramic summit. Highly recommended for anyone interested in testing their cardiovascular fitness.

While in the area, consider checking out the Wattles Mansion, Runyon Canyon Park, Chinese Theater, Hart Park Dog Park, “Nightmare on Elm Street” house, Monkey Business Farms, and Hollywood Bowl.
